Job Description

  • Plans, implements, supervises, and evaluates a variety of recreational, educational, and wellness programs, camps, leagues, and special events for all ages.
  • Develops program goals, budgets, marketing strategies, and staffing plans; recruits, trains, and evaluates instructors, supervisors, volunteers, and interns.
  • Recruits, trains, supervise, and evaluates recreation leaders, program supervisors, instructors, volunteers, and interns; promotes effective working relationships and a positive working environment.
  • Conducts needs assessments, prepares reports, and recommends improvements to enhance service quality and cost-efficiency.
  • Promotes programs through marketing efforts, community presentations, and partnerships; establishes and maintains strong relationships with local organizations.
  • Prepares budget estimates, grant and sponsorship proposals, and procurement specifications for program supplies and equipment.
  • Maintains records related to personnel, programs, services, and equipment; monitors program compliance with department safety policies and risk management procedures.
  • Assists with departmental strategic planning and policy development, including safety manuals and emergency action plans.
  • Conducts site inspections to ensure facilities are safe and staff are adhering to policies.
  • Provides outstanding customer service and supports responsive community engagement.
  • Participates in professional development and serves weekend on-call duties as scheduled.
Aquatics, Fitness & Community Engagement:
  • Oversees the planning, staffing, and delivery of aquatics operations (pools), fitness classes, and enrichment programs for participants of all ages, including active older adults.
  • Ensures compliance with local, state, and national safety standards through the implementation of robust staff training, emergency preparedness, and risk management practices.
  • Administers pickleball programming and provides leadership for operations at the Schuetze Recreation Center, ensuring a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for all users.
  • Oversees the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Senior Services grant and provides direct supervision of the Senior Activity Coordinator to ensure alignment with program goals and funding requirements.
Necessary Special Requirements
  • Must hold or obtain American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) certification within twelve months of hire.
  • Must hold or obtain American Red Cross CPR/AED/First Aid Instructor certification within twelve months of hire.
  • Must hold or obtain ServSafe certification within twelve months of hire.
  • Holds City of Waukesha Bartenders License for all City Special Events.
  • Must hold or obtain ServSafe certification within twelve months of hire.
Other Job Functions

Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation/Parks Management, Education, Business or a closely related field, supplemented by at least 4 years of progressively responsible experience in the planning, developing and delivery of recreation services at an administrative level; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, ability and skills:

Knowledge of:

  • Methods and techniques in planning, promoting, developing and supervising recreation programs and activities.
  • The theory and philosophy of recreation and its relationship to other aspects of community life.
  • Group dynamics and effective communication styles and techniques.
  • State and federal laws related to personnel management and human resources issues.
  • The use of standard office equipment, computers and relevant software programs.
  • Business English (spelling, grammar, punctuation, tone).
Ability to:
  • Organize and facilitate recreation programs and projects.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with City departments, coworkers, media, and the general public.
  • Establish and maintain positive relations with community groups, contracted service organizations and the general public.
  • Assess the recreation needs of the community and develop, implement, and supervise programs, activities and services to meet those needs.
  • Manage the effective use of media (print, television and social) to promote Department programs and activities.
  • Assign, supervise, evaluate and review the work of others.
  • Multi-task and prioritize responsibilities.
  • Handle difficult situations in a courteous and tactful manner.
Skill in:

Necessary Special Requirements:
Valid Wisconsin driver’s license; ability to pass a criminal background check; CPR/First Aid certification within 6 months of employment; Food Safety Manager required or ability to obtain within twelve months of employment; Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP) certification desired.

Salary/Salary Range
$35.9874 per hour ($74,853.75 annually)
