May 2026 - Current Legislative Update: Following the end of the regular legislative session in March, negotiations continued between Governor Evers and Republican legislative leaders on a proposed property tax and education funding package tied to the state’s projected $2.5 billion surplus. The bipartisan proposal included tax rebate checks, increased special education funding, new school aid payments, technical college tax relief, and income tax exclusions for overtime and tips. Despite support from legislative leadership and the Assembly’s approval of the package, the proposal ultimately failed in the Senate after facing opposition from both Democrats and some Republicans over concerns about spending levels, the legislative process, and the state’s long-term budget outlook. The collapse of the deal underscored growing divisions within both parties as the 2026 election cycle approaches. Suggestions Welcome!
